What’s the cause?
Agropur Ingredient’s employees gave back big time during our annual employee Thanksgiving meal. While enjoying the Agropur sponsored meal, employees participated in a food drive and raffle to benefit WAFER, La Crosse area’s largest food pantry. This organization is vital in the battle against food insecurity in La Crosse County and La Crescent, MN.
WAFER’s vision is as follows: WAFER is committed to addressing hunger related needs in La Crosse County, while treating each person with personalized service and dignity. We will procure food, develop resources, and collaborate with other programs, organizations, and businesses to alleviate hunger and food insecurity in our area. We will strive for effective stewardship of resources in order to provide successful food assistance programs.
Over the course of the next five years, WAFER will be working to reach those in our population most at risk, children and seniors. Our strategic directives include: Expanding and developing food procurement and food distribution procedures, and educating clients on nutrition and food preparation.
Agropur Ingredients employees collectively raise $541.00 and collected 265 lbs. of non-perishable items (estimated to provide for 220 meals) to be donated to WAFER.
How does it help?
WAFER serves about 1500 families (about 4000 people) monthly. More than 43,000 total individuals were served in 2015. This tireless nonprofit distributes about 18,000 food packages a year; food package provides each person in a family about 4 to 5 days’ worth of food. In 2015, about 1.5 million pounds of food, equivalent to approximately 1.2 million meals, were given out.
Lisa Schleich, interviewed by local News19, shares that WAFER has helped her keep up with her heating bill by offsetting the expense of food. Food is often the first thing people give up when money is tight which makes the urgency for donations all the more pressing.
